S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising consumers to avoid purchases of generic or brand-name drugs for erectile dysfunction (ED) without a prescription.
The FDA is advising consumers not to purchase ED medications as a generic or brand-name product and to wait until the manufacturer’s approved generic version of the product enters the market before making a purchase.
The FDA will issue an alert to any consumer who receives a generic version of Cialis or Viagra, the brand name of the drug, by mail. Consumers with insurance coverage for generic versions of the drug can’t purchase generic ED medications.
“This is a major step in the FDA’s effort to address a growing problem of ED,” said Kathleen Ullrich, MD, chairwoman of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “As a result, some people have been forced to purchase generic ED products.”
The FDA has not identified the source of the product that consumers purchased from the manufacturer and said it has not received any shipments of the generic product from Pfizer.
“FDA is aware of several cases where consumers have purchased products that are labeled with ‘Generic Viagra,’ ” Ullrich said. “However, there is little data available on the effectiveness of these products on a global scale and this is the first time FDA has evaluated the effectiveness of generic and brand-name drugs in treating ED.”
The FDA is advising consumers to exercise caution when buying any generic products, including those containing the same active ingredients as those used in the brand-name version.
The FDA issued a warning last month that the use of the generic ED product Cialis has led to an increased likelihood of a number of adverse events, including erectile dysfunction.
“The safety and efficacy of Cialis and similar products has not been well established in the past,” the FDA said in a statement. “There is a growing trend of generic medications containing the active ingredient tadalafil have been associated with a number of adverse events.”
A similar warning was issued in 2016, but the FDA did not determine whether tadalafil caused erectile dysfunction, or if the risk could be mitigated by adding a calcium channel blocker.
“This is a dangerous trend that has resulted in more patients switching from brand-name ED drugs to generic products,” the FDA said.
In May, the FDA issued a warning to consumers to not purchase any brand-name ED products. However, the FDA does not recommend that any consumer purchase ED medications.
In May, a similar warning was issued in March, and the FDA issued a similar warning about the use of tadalafil in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The FDA has not received any shipments of Cialis or Viagra from Pfizer since December 2017, but it is expected that the drug’s makers will make an effort to return the product after it expires.
